Top Ten Objectives at Jobseeker &Employed Events

Once you have attended a speed networking event and found others you would like to network with, agreed to exchange contact info., and built a relationship; imagine the questions you might ask that they would be willing to share with you. To get you started, we've listed the top ten jobseeker & employed networking objectives in the form of questions, below.

   1) Because our backgrounds and skill sets are so evenly matched, do you think we should
       keep in touch to,
     *  Let each other know if we find a job, and then quit, or are let go.
     *  Refer each other if we land a job for a company that has multiple openings?
     *  Exchange information on jobs that we have interviewed for, but failed to get?
     *  Exchange educational or other resources within our field.

  2) Because you have a higher level of experience than me, may I give you my resume in
case you need to fill a subordinate position in the future?

   3) What positions have you recently applied for, but were unsuccessful in landing the job?
    *  Do you know if the position is still available?
    *  Is there any info. you can share regarding the company, position, or contacts
that may be useful to me in applying?
    *  Did they tell you why you did not qualify for the job?

  4) Are there any companies you have worked for in the past that you might refer me to?

  5) Can you provide any insider information on companies in this area?

  6) I’m changing careers; would you have time to schedule an informational interview with
       me?

  7) Are there any educational resources in our field you can recommend?

  8) I have advanced MS-PowerPoint skills, and I’m looking for someone with advanced
MS-Excel skills that would like to exchange knowledge of these applications.

   9) Would you consider becoming a mentor?

  10) What are your current networking objectives? Is there anyway I can assist you?

IMPORTANT: If you are new to networking, please note question #10 above. It is the single most important question you can ask in achieving your networking goals; as the person you help today may provide you with a job lead tomorrow. When attending a networking event, remember: That networking is not only about getting, but also about giving.
