Why Jobseekers Should Network With Each Other...

If you’re looking for a job, you probably think of other jobseekers within your profession as your competitors, and you’re right, they are; however; when you attend a speed networking event with them, they can be extremely instrumental in your landing a job.

As a jobseeker, you have acquired valuable information about companies and available positions. Networking with other jobseekers within your profession gives you the opportunity to exchange this information. No, I’m not saying you should tell them about jobs or interviews you’re currently trying to get. What I’m saying, is: As jobseekers you have probably acquired information that is no longer important to you, but could be very important to another jobseeker. For example: Just like you, they have probably recently interviewed for jobs they DID NOT get, (they may have been over qualified, or under qualified for the position), but the point here is: THEY KNOW THE POSITION IS STILL AVAILABLE! They can provide you with valuable information regarding the company and position, such as: 1) Position details. 2) Name and contact info. of person/s making hiring decision. 3) How soon the company plans on making a decision. 4) What skills, education, and background are important in filling the position. 5) The reason they were told they did not get the job. 6) What other positions the company may be looking to fill. 7) Benefits. 8) Salary. 9) Heads-up on interview questions and process.

Speed networking with another jobseeker within your profession and geographical area gives you the opportunity to speak to them one-on-one, decide if they are someone you would like to network with, and if you choose, exchange contact info.. This will enable you to keep in touch, and build a relationship to exchange valuable information in the future.

When you attend a 2 ½-hr. speed networking event, you’ll have the opportunity to meet approx. 24 jobseekers within your profession and geographical area, which could prove to be the most productive 2 ½-hrs. you’ve ever spent on your job search, and career. It’s FAST, FUN, and a very effective method of building your network for the future.

* Find a job.

* Meet superiors in your field that may later be in a position to hire you.

*Get insider information on companies and positions.

* Set-up informational interviews for career change or advancement.

* Exchange resources for career education.

* Find a mentor/become a mentor.

* Make friends and have fun while building your network.
